Ground Passage

Roots are gnarled things.

Disorderly to hold soil
In embrace, carnal,
Biological, symbiotic,

Earth clusters around roots.
First thing, after up
Rooting, is to shake
The clusters of earth off.

Which soil is this?
The Motherland?

In my efforts to examine
My roots, I shake off excess dirt
Only to hear soft and sleepy cries
As the clumps strike the ground
And break.

I have been examining the wrong thing.

I have woken them.
